Vol. 254 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Schools.

26.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to have a comprehensive school built in Dingle, County Kerry.

The future provision to be made for post-primary education in the Dingle area is at present under active consideration. A meeting of all the interests concerned has been arranged for Dingle on 10th June to discuss the whole matter.

Could the Minister say who will be invited to that meeting? Will the parents be invited?

I have not information on that.

Perhaps the Minister would pass on the information to me?

I will.

27.

asked the Minister for Education when the following repairs will be carried out at Knightstown national school, Valentia, County Kerry: (1) the installation of modern toilets, wash hand basins and running water, (2) the provision of adequate heating in classrooms, (3) the installation of lighting and power sockets and (4) the removal of the mud from and the resurfacing of the school yard.

It is proposed to replace the three existing schools at Valentia by a new central school at Ballyhearney. In the meantime a grant has been sanctioned towards the cost of water flushed sanitation at Knightstown national school. My Department is in communication with the manager regarding the other works necessary to keep the school in a serviceable condition pending the erection of the central school.

Can the Minister say when will the new central school be built?

I cannot say that. The position is that we are awaiting documentary evidence of title in relation to the site offered by the manager. We cannot proceed until we have that. A grant was sanctioned towards the cost of improvements to Knightstown national school in February, 1971.

Could the Minister say if he has financial provision made for the school?

I cannot say exactly what the position is except that we have got evidence of title but a grant towards the cost of the improvement of the old school was sanctioned by the Department in February, 1971.
