Vol. 254 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lamb Deaths.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that a large number of lambs have been killed by foxes and badgers in the south County Dublin mountains during this year; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure that similar incidents will not recur in future.

I am aware that lambs are killed by foxes in various parts of the country but I am not aware of any serious damage by badgers. Schemes for the destruction of foxes are operated with the approval of my Department by various county committees of agriculture, including the County Dublin committee which gave a grant of £500 last year to the Dublin Regional Game Council towards the extermination of vermin such as foxes. The committee have allocated a further £500 this year for the same purpose.

This all happened since I left that area.

There are some clever old foxes in this House.
