Vol. 254 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Diesel Lorry Taxation.

60.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will allow diesel lorries, used only for the purpose of transporting milk, to be taxed at the same rate as an agricultural tractor, i.e. £2.50 so as to lessen the cost of milk haulage.

The answer is "no".

Would the Minister not agree that if this suggestion were adopted it would confer a lot of benefit on milk producers and the loss to the State would be negligible?

That may well be but it is not intended to do so.

Can the Minister state what the loss would be to the State?

I have not got that information here.

Did the Minister examine the question? He must have given it a very cursory glance.

I have given the matter much examination. The concessions that have been given in regard to tractors and other vehicles owned by farmers have been extensive in recent years and I do not propose to provide any further concessions in this instance.
