Vol. 254 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug Imports.

79.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been drawn to a statement to the effect that drugs are being imported through the post; and if any special steps are contemplated to have this practice stopped.

I assume the Deputy is referring to a recent Press report. I have no evidence that illegal importation of drugs by post is occurring to any significant extent. Certain preventive measures are already operated by my Department and the customs authorities. In the light of the recommendations of the working party on drug abuse the question of whether any additional measures are necessary and practicable is being considered by my Department in consultation with the Revenue Commissioners and other interested Departments.
