asked the Taoiseach the total number of persons in receipt of social welfare allowances indicating the number in receipt of unemployment benefit and assistance; and if he will express the number in receipt of social welfare allowances as a percentage of the total electorate.

The estimated total number of persons in receipt of social welfare allowances, other than children's allowances, in April, 1971 was 385,170. This figure includes 35,757 persons in receipt of unemployment benefit and 42,883 in receipt of unemployment assistance. The number of persons in receipt of children's allowances in the same month was 342,669, some of whom would also have been in receipt of other social welfare allowances. Persons in receipt of social welfare allowances, other than children's allowances in April, 1971 represented 21.9 per cent of the total electorate.
