Vol. 254 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Factory Noise Levels.

8.

asked the Minister for Labour if any studies have been carried out to determine if noise levels in any Irish factories are dangerous to human health; and, if so, whether any action is contemplated.

Last year a survey of noise levels in Irish industry was commenced by the industrial inspectorate of my Department. The annual report of the inspectorate for the year ended 30th September, 1970, which has been laid before each House of the Oireachtas summarises the results of the survey which indicated that noise levels in some sectors of industry were potentially harmful. Where workers were found to be exposed to noise levels sufficiently high and for periods sufficiently long to be harmful, the employers were notified and advised as to the most effective remedial steps to be taken to reduce noise levels. The survey work is continuing and when it has been completed I will consider the need for the formulation of special control regulations.

Would the Minister tell us whether people who suffer as a result of excessive noise in their jobs will be considered under the Occupational Injuries Act?

I am afraid I could not say that offhand.
