Vol. 254 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Beet Production.

47.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if sugar beet will achieve a greater importance for Irish farmers under EEC conditions; what this will mean in terms of extra acreage of sugar beet; and the percentage increase in price which will arise.

The level of Ireland's sugar production quota from the time of our accession to the EEC up to mid-1975 is a matter which has yet to be settled in negotiation with the Community. The Community envisages that the present system of national sugar production quotas will cease in mid-1975 and that prior to that time the Council of Ministers will define the final arrangements to apply in the sugar sector.

No significant change in the price received by Irish growers for sugar beet is expected on Ireland's accession to the EEC as the current price here is already at approximately the EEC level.
