Vol. 254 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Court Charges Statistics.

72.

asked the Minister for Justice if figures in respect of court charges for each type of offence are sent from each Garda superintendent's area to his Department, to the Garda Depot or to any other central collecting office.

Statistics of offences known to have been committed, of court proceedings in respect of offences and of the results of such proceedings are contained in the Annual Report on Crime which is submitted to the Minister for Justice by the commissioner, Garda Siochána, and which is published and laid before each House of the Oireachtas. Copies of the reports for the year ended 30th September, 1969 and earlier years are available in the Library.

Why is the record for the year ended 30th September 1970 not yet available?

Because the statistics have not yet been fully compiled. A tremendous amount of work is entailed. They must be obtained from every station in the country.

What is the normal time lag?

The year ends on 30th September and as far as I can remember the report is published about July or August of the following year. It should be out in a month or two.
