Vol. 254 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether the proposed legislation in connection with EEC entry will be confined to this issue, or whether other proposed changes in the Constitution will be included.

A final decision on the matter has not yet been reached but I am in favour of legislation that will facilitate putting the issue to the people in the most unequivocal way possible.

In other words, during this period the Taoiseach will not ally this with any other Constitutional changes?

I think it would be better not to do so.

So do we.

Could the Minister say if any proposed amendments to the Constitution would precede or succeed the proposals in relation to the EEC? Has he any intention in regard to a time programme for any of the other recommendations that have been made?

Any other proposals to amend the Constitution would not precede the one in question.

In view of the progress made this week by the British negotiating team, can the Taoiseach give any indication of a date on which this referendum is likely to take place?

I think the original prognosis is still a correct one. Some of the major issues will have been solved before the end of July but there will be other outstanding ones and, thereafter, legislation will be prepared to enable a referendum to take place about the middle of next year.
