Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Commuter Train Service.

36.

andMr. Bruton asked the Minister for Transport and Power if CIE will initiate a commuter train service to Dublin on the great western line to cater for the needs of the growing population in the North Kildare, South Meath and West Dublin areas.

As I indicated in reply to a question on 11th March, 1971, the suburban railway services have been under examination by a firm of consultants employed by CIE. CIE have informed me that the consultants' report has recently come to hand and is being examined by the board. Pending completion of this examination it is not possible to say what the prospects may be for the provision of commuter services on the line referred to by the Deputy.

How long does the Minister expect it will be before this study is completed and a decision taken?

Next month I should have the report from McKinseys to hand. I propose to have it published. The decisions will take some time and will involve legislation here in the House during the present financial year.

Can the Minister indicate why the extension of a commuter service would require legislation?

It is part of the overall picture which will certainly require legislation.
