asked the Minister for Finance the estimated total weight of tobacco contained in cigarettes supplied in Ireland in the years 1950, 1960 and 1970.

54.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each of the years 1950, 1960 and 1970 the total revenue from cigarette sales.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 53 and 54 together and, as the answer is in the form of a tabular statement, to circulate it with the Official Report.

* The bulk of the tobacco revenue is derived from raw leaf imported for manufacture into cigarettes, pipe tobaccos or other products. As the duties on the leaf are collected without reference to end-use it is not possible to furnish accurate statistics of the total weight of tobacco contained in, or the revenue derived from, the separate products. The figures given include estimates of the weight of tobacco used in the manufacture of cigarettes in this country and the amount of tobacco revenue attributable to such cigarettes for the years in question; the figures also take account of imported cigarettes.

† In addition, turnover tax was payable, at the rate of 2½% up to 30th April, 1970 and 5% thereafter, on receipts from retail sales of cigarettes. Separate figures of receipts of this tax in respect of cigarettes are not available.
