Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Intermediate and Leaving Certificate Examinations.

78.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of students who applied to sit for the intermediate certificate and leaving certificate examinations this year; the number who are actually sitting for these examinations; if he will arrange for the holding of supplemental examinations in the autumn to facilitate those who through illness could not sit for the earlier examinations and those who failed the earlier examinations.

The total number of candidates who applied to sit the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations this year are 37,333 and 24,644, respectively but it is not possible to state the actual number sitting the examinations. With the exception of Irish leaving certificate, it is not proposed to hold repeat examinations in the autumn.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say why it is proposed not to hold a repeat examination?

Because it would not be feasible. It would not be possible to make appropriate arrangements to get examination papers done in the other cases.

Repeat examinations are possible in academic institutions. Surely it should be possible in this instance also?

As the Deputy is aware, academic institutions do not have to deal with such numbers.
