Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

81.

asked the Minister for Education what provisions exist to enable young people, including those going to novitiates in religious institutions, to benefit from a grant or scholarship for higher education in a subsequent year after their leaving school.

Provision is made in the higher education grants scheme whereby students who are awarded grants in a particular year but who, due to exceptional circumstances, are unable to commence their university courses in that year may, on application, have their grants deferred for a reasonable period. A similar arrangement exists in the case of students becoming eligible for university scholarships under the schemes of university scholarships for students from the Gaeltacht and students who wish to do their university courses through Irish.
