Vol. 255 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Beet Production.

20.

asked the Minister for Finance if the proposal to direct surplus sugar beet from Counties Cork and Kerry to the Tuam sugar factory was approved by him; and, if so, if the Government will ensure that the proposal is implemented.

Arrangements for the processing of sugar beet are the responsibility of Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teoranta and neither the Minister for Finance nor the Government has any function in this regard. I understand that the Irish Beet and Vegetable Growers Association has proposed that some of the beet grown in Counties Cork and Kerry be diverted from Mallow to Tuam but that this proposal is unacceptable to Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann because of the cost involved and the administrative difficulties to which it would give rise.
