Vol. 255 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Naas Dual Carriageway.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the generally dangerous condition of the Dublin/Naas dual carriageway at Naas on which 4 persons have been killed within the past 8 months; if officers of his Department will immediately carry out an on-the-spot innvestigation with a view to having the road made safe; if, with a view to avoiding any further loss of life, arrangements will be made to have all other road works in the locality brought to a standstill until that section of the road has been put in a safe condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My information is that the fatalities to which I assume the Deputy refers, and which I deplore equally with the Deputy, occurred at night or in the early morning on a section of road west of the dual carriageway and west of the area where road widening works are at present in progress. There is no evidence that the character of the carriageway was a contributory factor; the section of road concerned is straight, and has a good surface. It is subject to a 40 mph speed limit. In so far as responsibility for road safety measures rests with Kildare County Council as road authority and with the Garda, I am satisfied that they are fully aware of their responsibilities. No proposals for road improvement works have been submitted to me by the county council.
