Vol. 255 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Colliers' Redundancies.

23.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will give details of the number of men who were declared redundant at Ballingarry Collieries, Limited, County Tipperary; the amount of lump sum payments involved; and the estimated cost of making weekly redundancy payments to the men concerned.

When Ballingarry collieries closed down on 16th April, 214 employees were dismissed by reason of redundancy. Of these, 104 qualified for redundancy payments under the Redundancy Payments Act, 1967.

The amount of lump sums payable under the Act is approximately £22,000. As the company have indicated that they are not in a position to pay the lump sums, I am arranging for payment from the redundancy fund. The company will be liable to repay to the fund the amounts involved, less the rebates allowable under the Act.

Up to 2nd July, 1971, the amount paid to the employees concerned by way of weekly redundancy payments was £7,700 approximately. As a weekly payment is made only where the person eligible is unemployed it is not possible to indicate the total cost of such weekly payments at this stage.
