Sugar exports in 1970 amounted to about 52,000 tons. Of this quantity 16,800 tons were exported as refined sugar and the balance in manufactured products.

Imports of raw sugar amounted to 29,600 tons. Apart from 1,000 tons of specialised types there were no imports of refined sugar.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what effect EEC membership will have on the beet industry.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question on this subject on 17th June.
