Vol. 255 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beef and Veal Prices.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the EEC common guide price for beef and veal; and the intervention price for these products in 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72; and the prices proposed by the EEC Commission for 1972-73.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Intervention becomes mandatory once the representative market price has fallen below 93 per cent of the guide price. The intervention regulations apply only to beef.

49.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what average price Irish farmers would receive at present for beef of a quality comparable with that for which EEC guide and intervention prices are fixed, if Ireland were a member of the EEC; and what the current price is in this country.

The EEC guide price is related, not to a specified quality of beef, but to the overall quantity of beef marketed. Intervention purchasing takes account, by applying appropriate co-efficients to the guide price, of the quality of beef being purchased. If Ireland joins the Common Market, suitable co-efficients will have to be calculated to meet our case.

The EEC current guide price for cattle is £305 a ton liveweight or a little over £15 a cwt. This is about 50 per cent above the average market price of Irish cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the average prices received by farmers in each member country of the EEC for beef sold in the farm years 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72 to date.
