Vol. 255 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acceptance of Irish Bank Notes.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received any complaints about Irish bank notes not being accepted in Britain; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Neither my Department nor the Central Bank have received any complaints in recent years with regard to the non-acceptance of Irish notes in Britain. If the Deputy is aware of any specific cases of Irish notes not being accepted by banks in Britain and supplies details, I will pass the information on to the Central Bank for investigation or, alternatively, the Deputy may wish to communicate directly with the Central Bank.

I would, however, point out that Irish notes are not legal tender in Britain just as British notes are not legal tender here. The acceptability of Irish notes in ordinary business transactions in Britain depends on local practice in the light of the surrounding circumstances.

Is it a fact that the general commercial practice here is to accept British notes whereas the contrary is the case in Britain?

In general this is true but I understand that in some cases Scottish notes are not always accepted.
