An inventory of national heritage items has been in progress over the past few years under the general direction of An Foras Forbartha. Several State and semi-State bodies are co-operating in the work. The inventory covers most of the very wide range of items making up the national scientific, historic and artistic heritage as defined in the report on "The Protection of the National Heritage" prepared by a committee of An Foras Forbartha and published in 1969. Appendix 2 of the report contains a full list of these items. The report was presented to the Oireachtas in November, 1969.
