Vol. 256 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Treatment of Tax Assistant.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received complaints concerning alleged discrimination against a tax assistant (name supplied); and, if so, what action he has taken in the matter.

38.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Finance if he has investigated the complaint that a tax assistant was badly treated by an inspector at Liberty Hall, Dublin on the 10th February, 1969; and, if so, with what result.

39.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Finance what action took place at Liberty Hall, Dublin on 10th February, 1969, when an inspector of taxes took punitive action against a tax assistant (name supplied).

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 37, 38 and 39 together. Inquiries have been made by the Revenue Commissioners concerning the complaints made by a former member of their staff whose name has been supplied. As a result of these inquiries they are satisfied that there is no justification for complaints about discrimination, punitive action or bad treatment in relation to the man in question.

Does the Minister believe that?

That is very good of him. I can tell him something else: I would not believe the daylight from them.

Maybe the Deputy would not, but I have no reason to disbelieve the information given. It has been substantiated by two witnesses who made signed statements.

Are the two witnesses officials?

All of them were officials.

Do I understand the Minister to say that no punitive action was taken?

I said there is no justification for complaints about discrimination, punitive action or bad treatment.

There was no discrimination, no bad treatment and no punitive action?

The Minister is a very trusting man.
