asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of 30th September, 1970, and 30th September, 1971, the number of workers employed in State forests.

The number engaged in State forestry employment in the week ending 25/9/70 was 3,397. The number for the week ending 24/9/71 was 3,140.

Can the Minister say what is the reason for the reduction and is he in favour of the present policy whereby fewer ordinary workers are employed in forestry, on lands and also on the roads?

I will be dealing with that matter in the reply to the Estimate to my Department later this week.

Can the Minister say whether our forests are not being allowed to fall into a very deplorable condition, as is visible to anybody who visits them, as a result of this withdrawal of employment in the forests?

I totally disagree with that. The contrary is the case.

The Minister can disagree with it as much as he likes. I am stating facts.

The fact that Deputy O'Donovan expresses an opinion in the House does not necessarily mean that he is correct.
