Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport

63.

asked the Minister for Education if he will continue to provide transport for primary school children who have attained the age of ten years and who reside more than two miles from a school.

A child who has attained ten years of age must reside at least three miles from the nearest suitable school in order to be eligible for free transport to school. The effect of the Deputy's proposal would be to reduce the required minimum distance to two miles for such children.

I do not feel that this would be warranted or that the taxpayers should be called on to meet the large expenditure which would be involved.

64.

asked the Minister for Education if he has sanctioned a school bus service between Windgap and Dungarvan, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A transport service was sanctioned on 19th October, 1971, to convey eligible children from the district in question to the Dungarvan schools and CIE were asked to make the necessary arrangements.
