asked the Minister for Defence the number of times the Defence Council has met in the year ended 30th September, 1971.

The Council of Defence did not meet during the year ended 30th September, 1971.

The convening of such meetings is at the discretion of the Minister for Defence. Meetings are held with individual members of the council——

Does the Minister not think there is need for this body to meet in existing circumstances?

The members of the council are available to the Minister when required, both individually and collectively.

What, then, is the purpose in having a council?

Meetings of the council are held at the discretion of the Minister for Defence.

Due to the fact that morale in the Army was never so low——

It was never so high.
