Vol. 256 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conroy Report.

32.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the Conroy Report, he will consider the feasibility of establishing an auxiliary Garda force to deal with matters such as crowd and traffic control and similar routine matters, thereby allowing members of the ordinary force to concentrate on the prevention and detection of crime of a serious nature.

As I indicated in reply to a question on 22nd June last, suggestions for setting up a supplementary police force have been considered more than once but have not been adopted for reasons which appear to me to be valid. For one thing, there would be a serious risk that citizens would not have the same protection against abuses as they have now.

I can say however that the possibility of expanding the present Garda traffic section in Dublin and of establishing traffic units elsewhere is at present under consideration.
