The hospital population figures are those on 31st December, 1970. The area population figures are based on the preliminary 1971 census figures.

* At 31st December, 1970 there were 355 adult mentally handicapped patients in St. Raphael's, Youghal, and these patients are not now classified as mentally ill. In addition there were 446 patients (mainly geriatrics and social care cases) in Our Lady's Hospital, Cork, which are not now classified as mentally ill.
† Newcastle Hospital, Wicklow, opened on 1st November, 1966. There were 126 Wicklow patients in the Dublin hospitals on 31/12/1970. The 1970 Dublin/Wicklow patient figures have been aggregated for comparison purposes with 1960 and 1965.
