The entire population in Northern Ireland is eligible for a comprehensive medical service, including general practitioner care. In this part of the country about 30 per cent are so eligible but an estimated 90 per cent are entitled to use the more expensive elements of the service, notably the hospital in-patient and out-patient services and maternity and infant care.

The estimated per capita cost of health care met by taxation and health contributions during the current financial year is £29.7 for Great Britain and Northern Ireland and £25.4 for the State.
