Vol. 257 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Human Rights Conventions.

15.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Government now intend to ratify the United Nations Human Rights Conventions.

As I mentioned in reply to a question last week, the question of signature and ratification of the Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights is at present under consideration.

The question of signature of the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is also under consideration. Ratification of this Covenant cannot, however, be effected until certain legislation prohibiting discrimination on grounds such as race, colour, sex etc. has been enacted.
