Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 2 Dec 1971

Vol. 257 No. 6

Personal Explanation by Minister.

The Minister for Posts and Telegraphs wishes to make a personal explanation.

In replying to the debate on the Estimate for my Department on Thursday last, I said that The Irish Press had omitted altogether to publish the factual statement issued by my Department on 8th November correcting some misleading reports, which had received publicity, about the appointment of a sub-postmistress at Lettermore. The Irish Press has since indicated that it carried the Department's statement almost in toto in all editions of The Irish Press of 9th November except the city edition. I was unaware of this in making my remarks, having seen only the city edition. I want, therefore, to take this opportunity of apologising to The Irish Press for incorrectly stating that it omitted altogether the Department's statement.

It should be noted when we hear a Fianna Fáil Minister advertising The Irish Press——

The Deputy missed the bus again.

I did not miss the bus.

There can be no discussion on a personal explanation.

Perhaps the Deputy would like to make a personal explanation. It seems to be a time for personal explanations.
