Vol. 257 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School-Leaving Age.

65.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the proposal to raise the school-leaving age to 15 years, he will state what steps are being taken to ensure that the extra teachers and accommodation which this will necessitate will be available.

As a result of the free education, free transport and free books schemes voluntary attendance at school has reached such a level that the raising of the school-leaving age to 15 years is estimated to account for not more than 5,000 extra pupils. This number spread over the whole country will not present any great problem in relation to supply of either teachers or accommodation.

The output of teachers even at present would be sufficient to cope with the additional numbers.
