Vol. 257 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery Reorganisation.

74.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of proposals so far considered by the group appointed in April, 1970, to advise him on the economic and social aspects of specific proposals for creamery reorganisation; and the number of recommendations made to date by the group.

The answer to each part of the question is "One".

Could the Minister say if further proposals for rationalisation which are bound to come from the recently introduced Industrial and Provident Societies (Amendment) Bill will have to be referred to this group or will they be able to go ahead without being referred to them?

I would think that they could go ahead without referring to this group. I think the function of this group is to sort out the difficult ones. I hope and expect that as a result of the legislation introduced by my colleague, the Minister for Industry and Commerce, and the increasing perception on the part of the farming community of the urgency of the matter of rationalisation, proposals will come of themselves and be implemented by the farmers themselves.
