Vol. 257 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Marketing Boards.

76.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if it is proposed to establish permanent offices in Brussels for the major marketing boards for Irish agricultural produce.

As I indicated in reply to a question by Deputy Bruton on 25th November the position of our agricultural marketing boards in the context of EEC membership is being considered at present both at official level and by the farming and other interests concerned. It will be a matter for decision in due course in the light of each board's functions under EEC conditions whether or not they will need a permanent office in Brussels.

Is it not the case that Córas Tráchtála are establishing a permanent office in Brussels, or are in the process of doing so, and that equivalent moves should be made in relation to agricultural marketing?

I am not aware of what Córas Tráchtála are doing but I see the point the Deputy is making that any marketing organisation will need some kind of permanent base eventually.
