Vol. 257 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inland Salmon Fisheries.

79.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what it would cost in compensation to take into public ownership all inland salmon fisheries; and if he will state Government policy on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the replies in the House on the 5th February, 1970, and the 21st April, 1971, to questions on this subject from Deputies Desmond, Michael O'Leary and Hugh Byrne. I propose to await the report of the Inland Fisheries Commission before going further into the matter.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give us any idea as to when the report will be in his hands?

No, I cannot, but it was anticipated that the commission would be in a position to report within a period of two years and we are now within 12 months of that period.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say whether there is any danger of leases being renewed which would give some people a right to fishing waters which, if the report is published soon, might terminate their right in this respect?

I do not think so.
