Vol. 257 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Phoenix Park Golf Course.

85.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is expected to open the municipal golf course in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

I informed the House recently, when introducing the Estimate for Public Works and Buildings for 1971-72 that I am satisfied as to the feasibility of laying out an 18-hole public golf course in the Phoenix Park extension and good progress is being made with the development of the project.

Will a pavilion and clubhouse be provided along with the 18-hole golf course?

This is a must; there will have to be changing facilities, et cetera.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary know when the first nine holes will be available for use?

I cannot give a date but the way is clear for progress to be made on this project and some work is, in fact, taking place at present. The matter has to be considered by the Government before a final decision is taken.

The Parliamentary Secretary should be congratulated for responding so rapidly to a request made by me for an 18-hole golf course in this area.

Have the plans been fully finalised for this golf course?

I would not like to say fully finalised. Layout plans have been made in consultation with the consulting architects and the consulting golf course architects. The way is clear now to proceed with the golf course on the Long Meadows estate.

Can actual development take place if plans are not fully finalised?

They have everything but the money.

That is more or less the situation; no specific provision for a golf course has been made.
