Vol. 257 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Library Report.

38.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is proposed to publish the Humphreys Report on the National Library.

39.

asked the Minister for Education whether any consideration has been given to the provision of a much expanded National Library; and whether the present staffing position and space facilities are adequate.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 and 39 together.

The report to which the Deputy refers is one provided by a consultant whom I appointed to advise me, as the responsible Minister, on the requirements of the National Library as to accommodation, staffing and other matters. The report was not requested with a view to publication and it is not proposed to publish it.

Consideration is being given to the question of expanding the accommodation for the National Library and, as an interim measure, arrangements have almost been completed for the provision of an additional 33,000 sq. fet., approximately, of floor space for the institution, without prejudice to the further expansion which will be necessary if the library's requirements are to be fully met. The manner in which this further expansion might most suitably be undertaken is being considered in the context of the report of Dr. Humphreys. It will be appreciated that amelioration of the present accommodation difficulties is a first priority in relation to the National Library. When this has been achieved the matter of providing additional staff will receive immediate attention.

Is the Minister aware from reports on the situation that there is a severe lack of space in the National Library at present and that many valuable books are in danger of disintegration, as I have been told?

I agree that there is a serious lack of space and I not only know it from reports but I have examined the situation myself and, as I said, we are endeavouring to provide extra space.

Is the additional 33,000 square feet of space for the reading room or the storage of books?

I am afraid I have not got that information.
