Vol. 257 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Barrow Waterways.

6.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has received a proposal from the South Eastern Regional Development Organisation for the introduction of legislation to give control of the Barrow waterways to the Office of Public Works; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have received representations from the South Eastern Regional Development Organisation supporting the transfer of the Barrow navigation system from CIE to OPW.

The question of transferring responsibility for the Grand Canal including the Barrow navigation from CIE to the Office of Public Works has been under consideration for some time. I hope to introduce a Bill early next year to give effect to the transfer. Apart from legislation, a number of practical problems involving such matters as property and water rights, bridges and the transfer of staff will require to be settled and these are at present being examined.
