Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naval Service Divers.

33.

asked the Minister for Defence what diving equipment, if any, has been purchased for the Naval Service; and if it is intended to purchase any in the near future.

A small quantity of diving suits, breathing apparatus and accessories has been purchased and delivery of an air compressor on order since July last is expected very soon. The question of making provision in next year's Estimate for further purchases is being considered.

34.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of trained divers in the Naval Service and the extent and cost of their training.

There are at present four qualified ships' divers in the Naval Service who have been trained to examine the underwater sections of ships' hulls particularly in relation to sheathing, shafts and propellers. The cost of their training as ships' divers was £380 approximately.
