Vol. 257 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Factory.

87.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the proposal to close down the Guaire Fabric Premises in Gort, County Galway, and of the consequent hardship to the workers involved and to the town in general; and if he will say whether or not the business can be continued and, if not, what alternative proposals there are for a substitute factory.

I am informed that Guaire Fabrics Ltd. decided, for economic reasons, to move their production unit from Gort to the factory of the parent company, Braids Ltd., at Ennis where productive capacity became available as a result of a rationalisation scheme. I am informed that the workers who were engaged at the Gort factory will not lose their employment as a result of the move from Gort to Ennis; and I am also informed that the company will provide transport where required for the existing staff from Gort to Ennis, a distance of some 18 miles.

The IDA are endeavouring to attract an alternative industry to the area and, in pursuit of this objective, the authority have already brought the factory to the notice of a number of industrialists.
