Vol. 258 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical Oxygen Price.

251.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he sanctioned an increase in the price of medical oxygen from 66p to 98p per 40 cu. ft.; if so, the reasons for the increase; and, if not, if he will investigate the reasons for that increase in the current year.

It was not obligatory before 1st January, 1972, to notify me of proposed increases in the price of medical oxygen and I have not been asked to sanction an increase in the price of this product. I understand, however, that, except for an insignificant amount, all medical oxygen is sold to bodies such as local authorities, and certain hospitals, on the lists of the combined purchasing section of the Department of Local Government. The prices charged by the supplier are agreed annually between the combined purchasing section and the firm concerned.

I also understand that the small number of private users of medical oxygen are charged a similar price to that paid by users on the lists of the combined purchasing section. In these circumstances, I do not consider it necessary to have the increase in the price of this product investigated.
