Vol. 258 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation to Ex-Collectors of Taxes.

30.

Mr. Dunne

asked the Minister for Finance what compensation has been paid to ex-collectors of taxes who now hold positions as tax assistants.

Under the approved compensation scheme, an ex-collector of taxes who accepted employment as a tax assistant was entitled to be advanced from the compensation payable to him a sum equal to £1,000 or half the compensation, whichever was the greater, subject to a maximum of £3,000. The balance of the compensation was to become payable on the termination of his employment.

The amount of compensation that has been paid already to ex-collectors of taxes who now hold positions as tax assistants is £32,368. Further amounts totalling £20,025 will become payable to them on the termination of their employment.

Could the Minister tell me, first, are these tax assistants now pensionable; and, secondly, how many of these tax assistants are there in the State at the moment?

I understand there are 27 of this category employed as tax assistants of whom 18 are attached to the Dublin general tax district. To the best of my knowledge, they qualify under the recently instituted scheme of pensions for unestablished civil servants. I do not wish to be quoted as saying that with absolute authority because my brief does not cover it, but I am virtually certain they are covered by that scheme.
