Vol. 258 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ferry to Europe.

31.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if it is proposed to build a ship at Verolme dockyard, Cork for service in the ferry to Europe; and, if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by Irish Shipping Limited that negotiations are at present in progress with continental car ferry operators for the operation of a service from Rosslare from 1973 onwards. It is unlikely that the proposals under consideration will involve the building of a ship at Verolme Cork Dockyard. I have, however, asked the company to examine the possibilities of having a bulk carrier built at the yard. Furthermore, the B & I Company, also at my request, are examining the question of having a unit-load ship built at Verolme.

Do I understand the Minister to say that he anticipates being able to secure a ship for the continental ferry in the very near future?

Starting in 1973. There are very detailed negotiations going on at the moment between Irish Shipping and continental operators in this area and I hope to have a positive decision very shortly, but this will apply in regard to starting in 1973, not 1972.

In the event of it being necessary to build a ship in the Verolme Dockyard how long will it take before that ship will be launched and fit to go into commission?

It is really a separate issue. Verolme Dockyard are concerned in other negotiations going on between Irish Shipping and B & I in regard to building other vessels. The actual ferry vessel which we hope to secure for 1973, by co-operation with the continental operators, is in existence already so that there will be no delay whatever.

Will the Minister please reply to my last supplementary? In the event of it being necessary to build the ship in Verolme, how long will it take and when will the vessel be ready for service?

It will be two years. We hope to have a ferry ship which is already in existence operating in 1973. If we had to depend on Verolme it would take years longer.

What will happen if we do not get a ship?

I am confident that we shall.
