Vol. 258 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour and Bread Prices.

98.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of times the prices of flour and bread have been increased in the past year: and if he is satisfied that the recent increase in the price of bread was warranted.

Flour and bread prices were increased with my concurrence three times since the beginning of 1971 —in February, 1971, as an interim measure pending the completion of an inquiry into flour and bread prices by a Prices Advisory Body; in September, 1971, as recommended by the Prices Advisory Body; and in January, 1972, in accordance with a recommendation of the Prices Advisory Body.

Does the Minister agree that bread, which is the staple food of poorer people, should be increased in price in this way? Is there no way in which it could be subsidised?

That is a separate question.

I am asking about the increases and the Minister has said this increase was warranted.

I have dealt with the question.

I am asking could anything be done to subsidise prices?

That is a separate question.

The Minister is lucky again.

I am guided by the Chair.

Paying the Minister a ministerial salary is throwing money down the drain.
