It is estimated on the basis of the consumer price index numbers that £1 at mid-November, 1971, would purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as (a) 51.4 pence at mid-November, 1956, and (b) 77.8 pence at mid-November, 1968. The index numbers are calculated only in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year.
In other words the £ is worth only 10s now as compared with 13 years ago?
