Vol. 258 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Value of £.

8.

andMr. Timmins asked the Taoiseach the value of the £ at 31st January, 1972, as compared with its value at (a) 31st January, 1957, and (b) 31st January, 1969.

It is estimated on the basis of the consumer price index numbers that £1 at mid-November, 1971, would purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as (a) 51.4 pence at mid-November, 1956, and (b) 77.8 pence at mid-November, 1968. The index numbers are calculated only in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year.

In other words the £ is worth only 10s now as compared with 13 years ago?

It is becoming jet-propelled.
