Vol. 259 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kildare Houses.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects to give final approval for the erection of houses for old people in Droichead Nua, County Kildare.

I have approved the plans for these houses and the council's proposal to accept a tender for their construction is awaited.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any procil' posals in his Department for a housing scheme at Johnstown Bridge, County Kildare; and if he will state (a) the number of houses proposed and (b) why the scheme is not being started.

I approved Kildare County Council's building and financing proposals for a scheme of 12 houses at Johnstownbridge some time ago. I have recently been informed by them that unforeseen difficulties have been encountered in the provision of sewerage facilities for the scheme and that work cannot be commenced until these difficulties have been resolved.

Would the Minister have any idea what the council are doing or what steps are being taken to resolve the difficulties?

Does the Deputy know what the difficulties are?

Then the Deputy knows how difficult it is to solve them, but every effort is being made to formulate a new proposal to resolve them.

Surely these difficulties should have been apparent when the scheme was being prepared.

They were unforeseen and it is unfair of the Deputy to imply otherwise.
