Vol. 259 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sorting Office Temporary Staff.

143.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person (name supplied) who was told to report for duty in the Sorting Office, Sheriff Street, Dublin, on 18th December was subsequently advised that work was not available for him.

After the person concerned was offered temporary employment it was found that fewer temporary staff than was originally estimated would be required. It was necessary therefore to withdraw the offer of employment.

Would the Minister not agree that if someone is told to report for work and is not informed that the work is not available until he so reports, there should at least be some compensation given to the person who is so inconvenienced?

The question of compensation is new to this matter. I shall have Deputy Tully's suggestion considered, but I am not in a position to decide on it now.

The Minister will agree that it is rather unfortunate that a man who could possibly have found other employment was deprived of such employment by not being informed until he reported for work that he was not required.

I shall have Deputy Tully's sugestion examined.

I thank the Minister.
