Vol. 259 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosks.

60.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider putting the telephone in Stamullen post office, County Meath, outside the post office in a kiosk where it would be more convenient for users and available over the period when the post office is closed.

The call office telephone in Stamullen post office is little used and the provision of a street kiosk there is not contemplated at present.

Is the Minister aware that this post office, like every other post office, closes at 5.30 in the evening and is closed over the weekend, and that in these circumstances it is almost useless in the area? Would he not consider having some kind of kiosk erected outside so the people could avail of it?

I appreciate what the Deputy says. I know that the call office closes at 5.30 in the evening but I am assured that the telephone facilities in the call office are available to all people in all emergencies.

It is very unfair to knock up what is a private house after 5.30 and nobody wants to do that. Would the Minister have another look to see would it be possible to have the telephone brought outside for use over the weekend?

I will have a look, but I cannot promise the Deputy anything.

61.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if a telephone kiosk will be erected at Ballyfinnane Cross, Killarney, County Kerry.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Ballyfinnane Cross where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended kiosk programme for rural areas.

62.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider erecting a telephone kiosk in one of the three villages of Rossmore, Goolds Cross-Ballagh or Goolds Cross, County Tipperary, as it appears to be fully justified.

Provision of kiosks at Rossmore and Goold's Cross is not warranted at present but kiosks will probably be provided in both places later on under the extended rural kiosk programme for rural areas.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Ballagh where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended kiosk programme for rural areas.

63.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider having a telephone kiosk provided at Cloughvalley housing estate, Carrickmacross, County Monaghan.

The area in question is regarded as adequately served by existing kiosks at Main Street and New Street. The provision of additional public telephone facilities in the area is not considered warranted at present.
