Vol. 259 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Monument Repair.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to have the damage caused to the O'Connell Monument, O'Connell Street, Dublin, repaired; and the reason for the delay.

The responsibility for the repair of this monument rests with Dublin Corporation. I understand that the corporation have engaged an expert to arrange for the necessary restoration work on the monument but I have no indication of when such work is likely to be completed.

Could the Minister say when there will be an arrangement made with this expert? I understood a few years ago that Dublin Corporation intended to go ahead with this work. Could the Minister give any reason for the delay?

No, but I can answer the first part of the Deputy's question. In July, 1971, a certain person who was considered qualified to advise in this work was formally instructed by the corporation to arrange for the restoration of this monument.
