Vol. 259 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement Schemes.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of grants paid to County Councils in Galway, Mayo and Kilkenny for rural improvements for the financial year 1971-72 and the proposed allocation for the year 1972-73.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount allocated to County Meath for local improvement schemes for 1972-73.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of money he intends allocating to County Galway for local improvement schemes this year.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 41, 42 and 43 together.

The allocations to county councils in respect of the local improvements scheme in 1972-73 have not yet been decided.

The grant payments authorised for 1971-72 are as follows:

Galway County Council

£154,000

Mayo County Council

£142,000

Kilkenny County Council

£6,000

Will the Minister tell us when it will be decided? Is he aware that he told us in this House a couple of months ago that information would be given before the rates were struck? Is he aware that the rates have already been struck in many councils?

I do not think I made any such statement in the House as regards the local improvements scheme. I do not think so. I did say and I strove to fulfil what I said, that I was anxious to allocate the Road Fund moneys to each local authority as early as possible and I have already informed the House this morning that it will be done later this afternoon.

Why can this not be done later this afternoon?

It is an entirely different matter.

Why cannot the two be done?

I have answered the Deputy's question.
