Vol. 259 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Fruit and Vegetable Market.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if Dublin Corporation has any proposals for improvements to the Dublin fruit and vegetable market; and if he is aware that present facilities are not fully satisfactory for growers from County Meath and elsewhere.

The provision of facilities at the Dublin fruit and vegetable market is a matter for Dublin Corporation. I am informed that there are no current proposals for improvements, and I have no further information in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that this market was set up in 1892 and has remained unchanged since that date; that it is the centre of severe traffic congestion and is most unsatisfactory, most unhygienic; that there are no facilities for persons even to wash their hands before handling fruit which people will eat? Will he consider doing something urgently in order to improve the Dublin fruit and vegetable market?

I am well aware of the market and the conditions therein. As I have said, this is not my responsibility. It is directly the responsibility of the local authority and the Deputy should direct his remarks to them.

Seeing that there is no elected authority presiding over Dublin Corporation, it is only through this House that elected representatives can voice their opinion in regard to this matter.

That is not necessarily so. The Deputy can make representations to the city manager or the commissioner.
