With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 30 together.
The position regarding lands in the possession of the Land Commission for distribution is subject to constant fluctuation, depending upon progress in intake and allotment. This is particularly so at this time of year when Land Commission activities in the allotment of land reach their peak, so that a list of estates on hands at present would be quickly out-of-date and, therefore, largely irrelevant. More realistic figures would be those in respect of lands on hands at 31st March. These should be likely to remain reasonably firm for a period after the completion, on that date, of the seasonal allotment programme.
However, I am bound to say that the Deputy is looking for a great mass of detail concerning all the estates held by the Land Commission throughout the country. At any one time the Land Commission have in or around 60,000 acres of arable lands in their possession, comprised in some 2,400 properties. To compile a list giving only the names of these properties would, in itself, be a formidable task. A list giving all the particulars asked for would involve a quite disproportionate diversion of staff and would not be warranted.
However, in an endeavour to assist the Deputy, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report a tabular statement showing those estates which were in the possession of the Land Commission in Counties Laois and Offaly at the beginning of this month.
If the Deputy is interested in any particular estate, perhaps he would put down a further question, or communicate with me, and I will furnish him with all available information.
